Entry Door Replacement Cost Guide 2026

Entry door replacement is a relatively small project with outsized impact on curb appeal and perceived home quality. The front door is the focal point of the exterior elevation. Buyers, appraisers, and guests all form an impression from it before they even step inside. A worn or dated door telegraphs deferred maintenance even when the rest of the house is in good shape.

A basic single entry door replacement runs $1,500 to $3,000 installed. A full entry system with sidelights and a transom runs $3,000 to $7,000 depending on material and complexity. Solid wood custom doors can go significantly higher.

Fiberglass vs. steel vs. wood

Material Installed cost (single door) Maintenance Best for
Steel $1,500 – $2,800 Low, repaint every 5–7 years Value, security, energy efficiency
Fiberglass (smooth or wood-grain) $2,000 – $4,500 Low, stain or paint every 8–10 years Most homes, best balance
Solid wood $3,000 – $8,000+ High, refinish every 2–4 years Historic homes, premium properties

Fiberglass has become the default choice for most replacement projects because it doesn't warp, rot, or dent, insulates better than steel, and can be molded to look like wood grain. High-quality fiberglass doors are difficult to distinguish from real wood at a distance.

Steel is the value pick. Good security, decent insulation, and the lowest initial cost. The main downside is dents are hard to repair and the surface can rust at cut edges if not properly finished.

Sidelights and transoms

Adding sidelights (the vertical glass panels flanking the door) and a transom (the horizontal window above) transforms the entry from a standard door opening to a proper entry statement. The framing and installation work to add these elements is significant. Expect the project cost to roughly double compared to a door-only replacement.

If sidelights already exist and you're replacing them along with the door, look for a pre-hung unit with the door and sidelights combined in one frame. It installs faster and ensures a consistent seal between all elements.

Installation complexity

A like-for-like replacement (same rough opening size) is straightforward, typically a half-day job. Expanding the opening to accommodate a wider door or sidelights is a different scope: it requires structural work if the opening is in a load-bearing wall, plus new framing, drywall, trim, and possibly siding repair around the opening.

Security and locking systems

Most entry door replacements include a new lock set in the contract. Consider upgrading to a Grade 1 deadbolt (the highest security rating) and a smart lock if you want keypad or phone control. Smart locks run $150 to $400 for the hardware. Installation alongside a door replacement is straightforward since the door is already prepped for a lock set.

ROI at resale

Entry door replacement consistently returns 150 to 190% nationally, near the top of all home improvement projects. Like garage doors, the driver is first impressions. Buyers see the front door before anything else, and a quality entry door signals that the rest of the house has been looked after. The low project cost is a big part of why the percentage is so high.
